TECHNOVATION IN-CLASS ENRICHMENT for K-6

TECHnovation Workshop Series

TECHnovation is an in-school program (grades K-6) in which students participate in a progressive series of in-class sessions exploring technical disciplines, with an emphasis on coding.  We also offer an after school series called Creative Coders.to expand on topics covered in class .

For the fall semester of the 2020/2021 school year, we will be offering virtual TECHnovation coursework for students in grades 2-6 to support distance learning.  Programs for K-1 will resume when we students return to campus classroom schedules.  Available courses are indicated as ONLINE SESSIONS  below.  For more information about our programs, please contact us.

Grade 2

Coding Motion

Introduction to block-based programming and how it can be used to make things move. Students will begin by using code.org. to create animations.

Grade 5

Coding for Robots

Students will use block-based coding to program virtual Ozobots. Ozobots utilize a variety of motors and sensors. Coding will simulate how to control LEDs, avoid obstacles, locate course markers, follow lines, etc.

Grade 1

Stop Motion Animation

This program will introduce the basic concepts of stop motion animation with iPad to create projects including a final project which represents a story written by the students..

Grade 5

3D Creation Station

Students will learn computer-aided design and (CAD) create a project that will be 3D printed.

Grade 3

Creating with Scratch

Using Scratch, students expand their understanding of block based coding. They will learn to leverage the flexibility of Scratch to create projects of their own. They will learn how to create simple art using geometric shapes and develop simple animations and games. From a coding perspective the emphasis will be on introducing loops and conditionals.

Grade 6

Arcade Game Development

Students will be introduced to object oriented coding using Microsoft's Makecode Arcade platform. They will design a simple platformer retro arcade game. Though all of the design will be done using blocks they will be exposed to how the block-level coding is translated into both the Javascript and Python programming languages. From a coding perspective the emphasis will be on object oriented coding and the trade-offs they have with coding in Scratch.

Grade 3

Creative Coding and Makey Makey

Using Scratch, students will be introduced to coding with loops, conditionals, variables, etc. In the final session, students will learn the basics of conductivity using scratch with a Makey Makey.

Grade 6

Coding and Android App Development

Students will be introduced to coding with loops, conditionals, variables, etc. They will then use these skills as an introduction to Android App Development.

Grade 4

Coding Challenges with Scratch

This course will expand their exposure to Scratch coding. They will design several more complicated games and will learn how to use scratch as a project tool (i.e. creating animated greeting cards, ideas for school reports). From a coding perspective the emphasis will be on variables and utilizing the xy axis.

Kindergarten

Exploring with Ozobots

Introduction to robotics and programming using color codes. Students will use code on an iPad to program their Ozobot to execute simple commands like turn and go forward.

Grade 4

Challenges in Robotics
